Sulfur Burps : Causes, prevention and treatment of sulfur burps

 


What is sulfur burps?

Simply burps means a noisy sound produced from the mouth by the release of air from the stomach. More concisely, it is the emission of gas from our mouths. Sulfur burps are those burps that release air that smells similar to rotten eggs. It is generally caused due to an increase in hydrogen sulphide gas in the stomach. 

The air enters our oesophagus  (stomach) while swallowing and mixes with the digestive enzymes and chemical reagents mainly hydrogen sulphide. As a result,the burps have an odor like rotten eggs. Since the odour is due to the presence of hydrogen sulphide these burps are named as 'sulfur burps'. 


Sulfur burps are not considered to be harmful but if the burps are occurred frequently then it is not a good sign. This leads to digestive problems in our body.

What are the causes of sulfur burps?

There are different causes of sulfur burps like bacteria, unwanted food, undigested, certain digestive disorders, and many more. Some of them are presented below:-

1) The bacteria such as Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is common bacteria that leads to sulfur burps and other digestive problems.

2) Certain foods also cause sulfur burps. That food which has a high amount of sulfur(broccoli, garlic, cauliflower, etc.) should be avoided. If consumed, then may lead to sulfur burps.

3) Some people can have disorders in their digestive organs. Disorder such as swollen oesophagus or digestive tract can cause these burps. It is also so dangerous as it can causes several serious diseases. Some problems such as irritable bowel syndrome  (IBS) and gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD) are also its causes.

4) Stress, tension, anxiety, improper rest may also result in sulfur burps. Proper rest is very beneficial for a healthy digestive system and strong enzymatic system.

5) The problem of indigestion is also a factor to cause these burps. Some people are allergic to some foods they cannot digest a certain types of food. In such case, such food should be avoided.
 

Treatment of sulfur burps 

Drinking enough water 

Water is an important part of our life. About one third of our body weight is water. Most of the problems our body are eliminated by water. Drinking water time to time reduces the sulfur burps. It also reduces the bad smell coming from our mouth and also makes our digestive system strong 



According to US acedimies of science and medicine a normal human being should drink almost about 3.7 liters of water for men and 2.7 for women. Drinking water before meal is quite beneficial for the digestion of food. We should not drink water immediately after having meal. Water should be drunk 30 minutes to 1 hour after eating as far as possible.  

 

Herbal tea(Green tea)

According to health experts it is believed that herbal tea is very beneficial to our body. It benefits our digestive system a lot. It help to reduce the bad smell from our mouth and minimise the sulfur burps. 


Besides these it also help to reduce obesity. It helps to burn the extra about of fats of our body. Chamomile tea is one of the most beneficial in sulfur burps. The tea should be enriched with peppermint, rose hip, ginger etc like herbs.


Turmeric and ginger 

Turmeric and ginger are considerd to be the best homemade diseases resistant recipes since ancient times in the different corners of the world mostly in India. Turmeric is a better option to cure skin problems and the respiratory problems(specially bad breathe). You can take turmeric as raw or mixed with vegetables or can also consume turmeric juices. 

Ginger is also very important for reducing sulfur burps. It is consumed raw or in tea. It reduces the smell from our mouth.


Apple cider vinegar 

Apple cider vinegar contains vitamin C and acetic acid in it. And thus it kills the bacteria in the digestive tract and reduces the bacterial infection. It help to reduce the growth of bacteria.

It is quite useful to combat with the digestive disorders of our body. We can take a spoonful of apple cider vinegar mixed in a glass of water. It promotes a balanced digestive system and keeps our breathe fresh and odour free.


Prevention of sulfur burps 


Avoid sulphur rich food

 Those food which are rich in sulphur should be strictly avoided in sulfur burp. These food contains sulphur which increases the production of hydrogen sulphide and increase the rotten egg smell. Here are some list of vegetables which are rich in sulphur 

  • Garlic
  • Cauliflower 
  • Cabbage
  • Broccoli 
  • Radish
  • Turnip
  • Pulses and beans 


Some other sources which are rich in sulphur are

  • Beverages such as beer 
  • Meat 
  • Milk and milk products 
  • Soft drinks
  • Eggs and fish


Don't drinks alcohol and soft drinks


Alcohols and other soft drinks specially carbonated drinks such as Coca-Cola, beer and other drinks should not be consumed. These drinks affect the digestive system and causes problem in digestion. Specially it increases the production of acids in the stomach and leads to sulfur burps. Therefore these drinks should be avoided.


Avoid sugary foods and packed foods

Sugar is also one of the main reason for sulphur burps. So consume less sugar-rich foods. The packed food or junk food available in the shops and market are preserved for a long time using chemical preservatives. These preservatives affect our heath too much. It directly harms our digestive system weakens our bones. So these foods should not be eaten. 


Some others prevention of sulfur burps include not having any bad habits of smoking, chewing tobacco. Eating too fast with a hurry is not a good habit. We should eat slowly. The food should be chewed properly for a better digestive system.


Some people also have habit of taking heavy meals in special occasions. Be aware of that over intake of food also leads to sulfur burps and fowl smell from our mouth. Less intake of purine-rich food is also a better way to prevent this disorder.
